FAQs
What does a first appointment look like?
In the first few sessions, we hope to get to know you and we hope that you will get to know us. We want to hear your story, learn your strengths and understand your goals. We hope to build trust and answer any questions you may have about the process. By the second or third session, we will also work together to create a treatment plan that will serve as a map for the therapeutic process.
How long is a session?
We offer standard 50-minute sessions as well as 90-minute sessions and intensive session options. While most sessions are within the 50-60 minute range, there are times when extended sessions can be more helpful. We highly recommend 90-minute sessions for EMDR and couples therapy. We have found that this extra time allows you to gain more traction, insight and closure.

Intensive sessions are scheduled in three or four hour blocks. This can happen in one day or in a series of a few intensive sessions. Intensives are most beneficial for EMDR therapy as it provides much greater opportunity to process thoroughly some of the traumatic memories.

How long does therapy last?
Therapy will progress at your pace. We will never rush you or push you toward change but will follow your lead and comfort-levels. We have found that the more you invest--the more you share, process and apply or implement--the quicker and smoother the process will go. We find that scheduling weekly sessions, particularly at first, will also help you gain momentum and experience relief and progress quicker, perhaps even shortening the length of time you spend in therapy.
Do you accept insurance?
We do not work with insurance companies directly. But we are happy to provide you with the paperwork you need to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement at an out-of-network rate. You are also welcome to use HSA or FSA funds to cover therapy sessions.

What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a well-researched therapy designed to help the brain process difficult or overwhelming experiences. If certain memories feel stuck or easily triggered, EMDR uses simple, guided techniques—such as eye movements or tapping—to support your mind’s natural ability to heal. You remain in control throughout the process, and you do not have to share more detail than feels comfortable.

Does my spouse have to come with me for couples counseling?
While some couples sessions may be held with just one individual, most couples sessions will include both of you. Couples therapy focuses on the patterns and dynamics within the relationship. Therefore, it is most effective when both partners are present to contribute.
What age clients do you see?
At Hope & Healing Therapy, we specialize in therapy for adults. However, we do have training and experience working with children, as early as age five, adolescents, and teenagers. We also work with families, seeing different combinations of family members of all ages.
Do you prescribe or manage medication?
We do not. However, we are happy to collaborate with your primary care provider or psychiatrist to ensure that you receive the best and most coordinated care possible.
